Venkatesh alleges that the location of the underpass was shifted for the benefit of a few politicians and their supporters. It is one of the most unscientific underpasses in Bengaluru,’’ says H M Venkatesh, a resident of Judicial Layout. The underpass has no lights at night and no footpaths for pedestrians. “It is unsafe for women to use the underpass after sunset. These are not the only problems with the underpass constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 3.50 crore. This has resulted in a number of fatal accidents in the last few months, say residents of Sahakaranagar, Canara Bank Layout and Rajiv Gandhi Nagar. However, the absence of a conveniently located underpass and to cut down on walking an extra half a metre, pedestrians have continued to use the unmanned railway crossing to move between Sahakaranagar and Rajiv Gandhi Nagar. And the railway employee manning the crossing was removed. Before the underpass was constructed, people and vehicles used to move between Sahakaranagar and Rajiv Gandhi Nagar through a manned railwayīut once the underpass was inaugurated 600 metres away in August 2017, the railway crossing was closed to vehicular traffic. The first disadvantage of this underpass constructed by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and South Western Railways, say residents from nearby areas, is its location. But the one constructed between Sahakaranagar and Rajiv Gandhi Nagar in north Bengaluru is not just proving to be counter-productive but also dangerous. ![]() A railway underpass, in most cases, is supposed to ease traffic-related issues. ![]()
